I will be creating a series of three works, including two free standing and one wall mounted all made of ceramic clay. The two freestanding works I plan to create will be a model of an ancient roman architectural pillar that has vines growing all around it, on top of the pillar will be a bust inspired by the variety of statues I’ve seen here in Rome. The bust will be headless and in place of the neck will be the stump of a tree (I have a painting of this idea but won’t be able to get a photo of it until I get back home) . The wall mounted piece will be of turkey tail mushrooms or “shelf mushrooms” on some tree bark.
What inspires the work is a mixture of Roman architecture and nature, seeing the incredible buildings here and the nature growing around the ancient buildings is quite beautiful. What I will be creating is just that, the Roman architecture being succumbed by nature. Seeing the beauty that comes from letting the historic creations be overcome with something so unstoppable like nature itself.
I will be taking some inspiration for the bust from the artist Biliana Popova, she has a few pieces that mix the female body with cacti and other plant life. Most of the inspiration will be coming from the sculptures and paintings here in rome, ranging from the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican museums to the various museums in Rome.
